Modern Dance Project 2020
BYC Students practicing for MODERN DANCE PROJECTIn collaboration with ISD 191 Community Education and Burnsville Youth Collaborative, Youth Dance Ensemble has sponsored the MODERN DANCE PROJECT since 2015. The mission of MODERN DANCE PROJECT is to expose youth to Modern Dance and performing arts who have not had the opporutnity to experience it elsewhere.
30 students in grades 6-8 from Eagle Ridge, Metcalf and Nicollet Middle Schools attended the eight week program and worked with teaching artists Haley Jensen, Darrius Strong, and Bekah Gudim to learn the fundamentals of modern dance. The students were to be featured in a community concert on March 20 at the Mraz Center at Burnsville High School. That all changed quickly when a peacetime state of emergency was put into effect on March 16 due to Covid-19.
On very short notice and with the help of a few iPhones, the Modern Dance Project team captured the hard work of the dancers. In a very short period of time, the dancers learned three intricate dances. The majority of participants are new to dance, and they managed to learn the technically challenging choreography.  While the project did not end as expected, the Modern Dancers learned and grew through the process. We thank all involved with this project and heartily congratulate the dancers for their major accomplishments. We all look forward to next year's MODERN DANCE PROJECT.
